February 2026: Halfway through the year already! |
I have been in education for 34 years now. School years all have their own unique pacing. Some feel like 3 or 4 years long, and others race by. I have to say that the 25-26 school year seems to be a Formula I race car at top speed. I cannot believe we are past the halfway point already! Now having two college aged kids of my own, I became aware of how quickly time passes around the time they were in middle school. It literally felt like I blinked and they were graduated from high school. I can't implore you enough to enjoy this time with yours, as it goes all too fast.
First, I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy some time during our recent holiday break. February is when we break free of the post holiday doldrums, start experiencing longer days, and begin to look forward to a change in seasons. It is a good time to check in on any goals that your student set and monitor their progress. It is a fresh start academically as we change over classes for 3rd Quarter. Basketball has the bulk of its season, and then shuffles off the court to make way for Volleyball and Soccer at the end of the month. There is a four day weekend in the middle of the month, as well as our Valentine's Dance, which will probably dominate the social scene for a week or so with your child. In short, February is a month where we have a lot going on.
I have been reminded by my office coordinator to remind parents that if your student is taking a bus home and needs permission to board, THOSE MUST BE DONE BY 2:00. Thank you for all that you do. We hope your February is filled with positive vibes, and good opportunities for amazing memories.
Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns that we need to be aware of. Our office phone number is 360-538-8220. |

| HMS Athletics: Girls Volleyball and Boys Soccer Begin February 23!!! |
Boys Basketball currently has 70 boys turning out and 6 teams competing! Boys Basketball will give up the gym on February 19 when they play their last game of the season. But fear not those of you who love the feeling of our gym bleachers!! Volleyball season is coming! And boys....nothing like playing soccer outdoors in our early spring months! All paperwork must be in to Final Forms by the first practice
For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.
If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/
Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf
You can find updated Fall Sports Schedules here, when they are created: https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=33572
Please understand that contests can change at any time. We face an age of limited number of bus drivers and referees, so changes are likely. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them. |

Students will be contacted with more information as it becomes available. |

In honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, students at HMS were challenged to create a poster around the themes of tolerance and citizenship. While it was an optional exercise, many students answered the call, and placewinners were announced for each grade level at our recent assembly. Thank you to all of our particpants and congratulations to our winners! |

Where did January go?! I cannot believe we are already looking at February. Students came back to the downhill slide to the end of Quarter 2/Semester 1. Yesterday was the start of our new terms. Lots of excitement for some new classes and lots of woes because of lunch changes and friends not in our classes. I tried very hard to give students their requests, but class sizes have to be considered.
Hope Squad We came back from break and went straight to planning our second Hope Week for the second week of February. They have some fun theme days for our school. We will get back to lessons in February. Attendance
Missing school, regardless of whether excused or unexcused, means missing opportunities to learn & connect. Learn ways families can support their students’ attendance & how you can offer your support for overcoming barriers. Learn more: http://ow.ly/BWaW50KsiM0 #ShowingUpMatters
December's almost perfect homerooms were Hi-Cap and Hope Squad!! Remember that we are also counting the tardies. Students need to get to class on time.
We love seeing your child(ren) at school! If they are absent, make sure you are calling the school to excuse them. If they have a doctor's appointment, bring in a doctor's note to excuse. If you are planning a vacation, contact the office to set this up in a timely manner. Mrs. Strom is our attendance person, 360-538-8221 or hms.attendance@hoquiam.net.

Students compete in a Homeroom Hungry Hungry Hippo contest during our January assembly. While the staff team of Mr. Templer and Mr. Cook (THE Hungriest Hippo) probably set like a world record or something...there were allegations of "cheating," so.......whatever. |
HMS Rotary Students of the Month
|
We are proud to recognize Zoey Shope as our January Rotary 8th Grade Student of the Month. Zoey consistently demonstrates the Rotary qualities of Leadership, Integrity, Citizenship, and Academic excellence. She is the daughter of Bambi and Tyler Shope and a caring older sister to Paige. Zoey’s favorite class is History with Ms. Folkers, where her curiosity and strong work ethic shine. She stays busy participating in soccer and volleyball and enjoys hunting and spending time with family and friends. Zoey is especially proud of her academic success this year and is looking forward to high school, where she is excited to continue learning and compete in varsity sports.
Also earning January’s recognition is Alan Hernandez Nieto, who exemplifies the Rotary traits of Leadership, Integrity, Citizenship, and Academic excellence. Alan is the son of Melisa Nieto and Esteban Hernandez and a proud big brother to Oliver and Axel. His favorite class is Science with Mr. Templer, and he is highly involved in athletics, including basketball and soccer at both the school and club levels. Earlier this year, Alan had the incredible opportunity to travel to Spain to play soccer, and he also gives back as a youth soccer coach. In his free time, he enjoys camping, quad riding, practicing sports, and spending time with family. Alan is most proud of the opportunities he has had to travel through soccer and is looking forward to high school, where he is eager to play basketball with experienced players and continue competing in soccer.
Mr. Cook's To Do's When posing with the Rotary Students of the Month for a picture: a.) smooth out the wrinkles in the trousers; b.) Lose the glasses; c.) Suck in the Gut... |

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.
The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9. If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case. |
