March 2026: A Turning point

March always feels like a turning point. The days are getting a little longer, spring activities are beginning, and our students are settling into the academic routines that will carry them through the final stretch of the school year.

This is an important month for focus and momentum. Students are VERY aware that Spring Break awaits at the end of March, but there is a lot we need to accomplish this month. State assessments await in May, and we still have a.lot of "Hay to put in the barn." Focus and momentum are driven by BEING HERE. Attendance remains one of our top priorities. Each day matters — not just for academics, but for connection, belonging, and confidence. We have seen encouraging progress in reducing tardies and improving consistency, especially among students receiving targeted supports. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure students are here, on time, and ready to learn.

As we move toward spring break, we want to encourage students to stay organized, communicate with teachers, and take advantage of  opportunities if they need additional support. Small efforts now make a big difference in May and June.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Hoquiam Middle School. We are proud of the growth we are seeing and excited for a strong finish to the year

I have been reminded by my office coordinator to remind parents that if your student is taking a bus home and needs permission to board, THOSE MUST BE DONE BY 2:00.

Thank you for all that you do.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns that we need to be aware of. Our office phone number is 360-538-8220.

HMS Athletics: Volleyball and Soccer are here!

Girls Volleyball and Boys Soccer are upon us. This year we will have 6 teams of girls playing volleyball...it means lots, and lots of home matches. HMS will be starting new spectator rules for Volleyball season. Owing to a number of issues during the basketball season, any student who isn't under the supervision of a coach or parent/guardian or designee will not be allowed into the match. If your student wants to attend their must be an adult responsible for them in attendance. We are sorry that we need to take this step.

For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.

If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/

Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf

You can find updated Fall Sports Schedules here, when they are created: https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=33572

Please understand that contests can change at any time. We face an age of limited number of bus drivers and referees, so changes are likely. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them.

Counselor's Corner

Counselor's Corner

For the next few months, I will be sharing tidbits from Face to Face: Cultivating Kids' Social Lives in Today's Digital World.  The digital world has made things easier for our students but also difficult.  We see them on their phones/electronics, thinking this is how we connect with others.  I will admit that I will find myself on my phone more.  Then, I remind myself to put my phone down to have those conversations with my husband or make plans with a friend.  Our students need those in person connections too. "Our deepest wish is that children experience significance, love, and belonging at home in connection with their families, and that over time this connection flowers into a life well-lived within the greater community" (Chapter 1:4).  Plan time with your family that does not include phones/electronics by eating a family meal together at the table, going for a family walk, working in the yard, starting a garden, going for a drive to the beach, etc.  These connections are invaluable to our students and to ourselves.

Attendance

Attendance is a powerful signal and leading indicator of equity. It can signal when students might need additional support and areas for system and school improvement.
#ShowingUpMatters #AttendTodayAchieveTomorrow

January's almost perfect homeroom was ASB/Leadership, again!!

Not only do we look at unexcused absences, but we are also looking at excessive excused absences and tardies.  It is important that your child comes to school and be on time for all classes.

We love seeing your child(ren) at school.  If they are absent, make sure you are calling the school to excuse them.  If they have a doctor's appointment, bring in a doctor's note to excuse.  If you are planning a vacation, contact the office to set this up in a timely manner.  Mrs. Strom is our attendance person, 360-538-8221 or hms.attendance@hoquiam.net.

Hope Squad

We finished discussing Safeguards and Risk Factors.  What are the things in our lives that save us from suicide or self-harm: strong connections to family, friends, and community, helathy problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills, access to mental health treatment, cultural, religious, or moral beliefs discouraging suicide, restricted access to lethal mean, high self-esteem, and/or emotional self-regulation.  Warning signs for suicide:

D- depressed

A- acquiring lethal means

N- No more interest

G- giving away prized possessions

E- extreme mood changes

R- reckless behavior

O- out-loud expressions of suicide

U- unexpected change

S- saying goodbye

Please remember it is very important to not keep these secrets

HMS Rotary Students of the Month

Each month 8th grade faculty recommends two students for the Rotary Students of the Month. These students are usually students who show academic skills, good citizenship, involvement both in and out of school in a variety of activities and are leaders. This month, we are proud to point out two students that check all of the boxes!

Payton Nowak, daughter of Tasha and Anthony Nowak, is our Girl of the Month for February. She is an active and dedicated student who takes great pride in both her character and accomplishments. She shares a close bond with her siblings, Brantley and Jax, and values the time she spends with her family. At school, Payton’s favorite class is Science with Mr. Templer, where her curiosity and strong work ethic shine. She is deeply involved in athletics, competing in cross country, fastpitch, volleyball, basketball, track, and cheer. Outside of school, Payton enjoys playing sports and spending time with friends and family. She is especially proud of her ongoing commitment to being a person of high character and kindness, striving each day to positively impact those around her. As she looks ahead to high school, Payton is most excited about the opportunity to compete in varsity athletics and continue pushing herself to grow as both an athlete and an individual.

Santiago Garcia, son of Guadalupe Aguilar and Cyrus Garcia, is a dedicated and well-rounded student who values both family and personal growth. He comes from a large and supportive family, including his siblings Jackie, Monica, Bella, Jesus, Lupita, and Eveline. At school, Santiago especially enjoys Science with Mr. Templer and History with Ms. Folkers, where his curiosity and engagement stand out. He is a key member of the undefeated 8th grade football team, playing running back and linebacker, and takes great pride in his athleticism and ability to connect well with others. Outside of school, Santiago enjoys spending time with his dad doing outdoorsy, farm-related activities, which reflect his strong work ethic and appreciation for hands-on experiences. He is most looking forward to high school for the opportunity to play varsity football under the lights and is excited about having more choice in electives as he continues to grow academically and athletically.

On behalf of the staff at HMS, thank you both for making our school a better place!

HMS Student Fees

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.

The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.

If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
