April 2026: Spring has Sprung...

April is an important month at Hoquiam Middle School, and really just about any school, any where. As we enter the final stretch of the school year. With spring break behind us, this is a time to refocus, stay consistent, and build momentum toward a strong finish.

In our classrooms, this is the time of year when we need students to continue to engage in  learning that emphasizes not just completing work, but thinking deeply, explaining their reasoning, and applying their knowledge.  This is also a time when consistent effort and attendance make a HUGE difference. Being here, on time, and ready to learn each day is one of the most important factors in student success.

As we move into the spring season, we are proud of the many ways our students are getting involved—through athletics, music, and other activities that build teamwork, responsibility, as well as personal and school pride. These experiences are an important part of the middle school journey, and our track team is looking for anyone who wants to try out sports who may not have yet.

We also recognize that this time of year can bring increased academic, social, and mental demands. We encourage students to take advantage of support opportunities, communicate with their teachers, and adults, and stay organized with their work. Families can help by checking in regularly, supporting routines at home, and reinforcing the importance of "sticking to it" and "never never ever giving up". Great messages for sports and life.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our school. We appreciate and are proud of the progress many of our students are making and look forward to a strong and successful finish to the year.

I have been reminded by my office coordinator to remind parents that if your student is taking a bus home and needs permission to board, THOSE MUST BE DONE BY 2:00.

Thank you for all that you do.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns that we need to be aware of. Our office phone number is 360-538-8220.

HMS Athletics: Volleyball and Soccer are winding down!

Girls Volleyball and Boys Soccer are winding down their campaigns. At the time of this writing Soccer and Volleyball still have two matches to go. I want to thank our early spring athletes, who have turned out in such great numbers (81 volleyball players????), and braved some of the worst weather of the year (two soccer matches in monsoon conditions) to represent Hoquiam Middle School! Track and Field begins at the Middle School on April 13, the day we get back from Spring Break. All forms must be current in Final Forms for your athlete to be able to practice on day one. Track and Field schedule is not complete yet, but we will get it out as soon as it is.

For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.

If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/

Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf

You can find updated Fall Sports Schedules here, when they are created: https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=33572

Please understand that contests can change at any time. We face an age of limited number of bus drivers and referees, so changes are likely. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them.

Counselor's Corner

Where did March go?  I think it came in just as fast as it went out like the rain we had.  As we go into spring break, I hope we all get the needed sunshine and rest.

Tidbits from Face to Face: Cultivating Kids' Social Lives in Today's Digital World:  Middle school is definitely the middle years for our children.  They are learning to figure out themselves and understand the why of others-- developing and understanding feelings.  How do we help our children understand what they are feeling is normal when they are seeing things online that are not the same?  They start asking questions to better understand themselves and others.  With this comes the understanding of empathy.  Students ask me all the time, "Why do I have to understand where they are coming from?"  The answer is because we will better understand the why.  Why is the student doing what s/he is doing, wearing, saying, reading, etc?  It helps us be kind and forgiving.  Some ideas of fostering the gift of empathy (Chapter 2:9):

- Practice self-care and stress reduction together.

- Alternate active days with calm days.

- Recognize and honor that mistakes, conflict, and process are critical components of learning.  Everyone makes mistakes; it is how we learn and grow.

- Work to dismantle shame.

- Listen carefully and patiently to children's voices and stories.

- Teach your children to be flexible in their problem solving.

Hope Squad

Believe it or not, our whole month was getting ready for conferences.  The students worked very hard on their presentations for you.  I hope you are all able to attend.

Attendance

Absences are a signal, no matter if they are excused or unexcused. Understanding the factors contributing to chronic absence is a key first step to breaking down the barriers to attendance. More: http://ow.ly/w1V850KshCw #ShowingUpMatters #AttendTodayAchieveTomorrow

February's almost perfect homeroom was once again Leadership/ASB!

Not only do we look at unexcused absences, but we are also looking at excessive excused absences and tardies.  It is important that your child comes to school and be on time for all classes.

We love seeing your child(ren) at school.  If they are absent, make sure you are calling the school to excuse them.  If they have a doctor's appointment, bring in a doctor's note to excuse.  If you are planning a vacation, contact the office to set this up in a timely manner.  Mrs. Strom is our attendance person, 360-538-8221 or hms.attendance@hoquiam.net.

HMS Rotary Students of the Month

Each month 8th grade faculty recommends two students for the Rotary Students of the Month. These students are usually students who show academic skills, good citizenship, involvement both in and out of school in a variety of activities and are leaders. This month, we are proud to point out two students that check all of the boxes!

Alonso Aguilar and Sebrina Brock are outstanding examples of the character and commitment that Rotary wishes to celebrate through Rotary’s core values of service, leadership, integrity, and perseverance. Alonso, supported by his parents Alex Aguilar and Anna Espinoza and his sister Anna Aguilar, is a dedicated student-athlete who demonstrates perseverance and teamwork in all he does. He enjoys Algebra with Mr. Gwin and is actively involved in football, basketball, baseball, and after-school lifting. Outside of school, he values time spent playing sports with his dad. Alonso is especially proud of his undefeated football season, a reflection of his hard work and dedication to his team. Looking ahead, he is excited to continue his athletic journey in high school and looks forward to competing at the varsity level in front of larger crowds, embracing opportunities for growth and leadership.

Sebrina Brock, daughter of Colby Rogers and Amy Horton and sister to Terence, exemplifies integrity, curiosity, and excellence in both academics and extracurricular activities. She enjoys Honors ELA with Ms. Krohn and participates in volleyball, band, and pageants, showcasing her well-rounded talents and commitment to personal growth. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her dogs. Sebrina is especially proud of winning the State Elks Writing Competition, a testament to her dedication, skill, and voice as a writer. As she prepares for high school, she is most excited about exploring new classes and building relationships with her future teachers, demonstrating a strong sense of curiosity and readiness to learn. Both Alonso and Sebrina reflect the Rotary ideal of striving for excellence while contributing positively to their school and community.

HMS Student Fees

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.

The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.

If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
