May 2026: The Finish Line is in Sight! |
As we head into the final stretch of the school year, May is a time of reflection, celebration, and continued focus on learning. Our students have shown growth—academically, socially, and emotionally—and it’s rewarding to see that progress on display in classrooms, in our hallways, and on our athletic fields and music rooms. From engaging projects to collaborative learning experiences, students are applying their skills in meaningful ways and, we hope, finishing the year strong. This month also brings important opportunities for state assessment, goal-setting, and recognizing the hard work that has taken place throughout the year.
May is also a time to celebrate our staff, students, and families who make our school community so special. We look forward to upcoming events, performances, and end-of-year activities that highlight student achievements and bring us together. Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and partnership—it truly makes a difference. Let’s make the most of these final weeks and finish the year strong!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our school. We appreciate and are proud of the progress many of our students are making and look forward to a strong and successful finish to the year.
I have been reminded by my office coordinator to remind parents that if your student is taking a bus home and needs permission to board, THOSE MUST BE DONE BY 2:00.
Thank you for all that you do.
Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns that we need to be aware of. Our office phone number is 360-538-8220.

HMS Athletics: Track is off and running...hee hee!
|
Track began on April 13, and is already in its competition season. HMS is hosting two home meets this spring, one on April 27, and one on May 7. If you can help out at our meets that would be much appreciated. All forms must be current in Final Forms for your athlete to be able to practice on day one.
For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.
If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/
Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf
You can find updated Fall Sports Schedules here, when they are created: https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=33572
Please understand that contests can change at any time. We face an age of limited number of bus drivers and referees, so changes are likely. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them.

Counselor's Corner
We are very quickly coming to a close. This past month the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade classes registered for next year. Even though they signed up for different electives, they were told some of those electives may not be available in the fall due to how teachers are scheduled. We are still in flux with that. Everyone is a bit nervous and excited about going into the next grade. June 11, we will have the 5th grade come up and experience lunch. I think that is the most exciting thing for them because they get three choices. Afterwards all grades will attend their core classes for the next grade level. Very exciting for all!!
Tips for Maintaining Digital Sanity and Protecting your Family (Chapter 2:32-34) from Face to Face: Cultivating Kids' Social Lives in Today's Digital World:
1- Make sure your family has digital-free time together.
2- Limit time spent with electronics.
3- Protect good sleep habits.
4- Delay the introduction of phones, texting, and social networking for as long as possible.
5- Talk to your teens about the addictive nature of online pornography.
6- Take care of yourself.
Hope Squad
We are back at it with our lessons. We started with learning about how to talk to our friends about suicide. The hardest thing for our teens is helping them understand this is not a secret to keep. They need to tell an adult. Would they rather lose a friend to suicide or have a friend mad at them? We have just started talking about inclusivity and exclusions. We all want to feel included wherever we are. How do we do that? Sometimes this is the hardest thing for teens to do because it is difficult to step away from what is known. But think about the other student who has been sitting alone at lunch or no one asks to partner with them. If we can talk with our teens about being kind to all, we will see more acceptance of all.
Attendance
Student success begins at attendance. #ShowingUpMatters #AttendTodayAchieveTomorrow
We are getting to the end. Please remember it is important to call/email when your student is not attending school. The unexcused absences are beginning to add up.
March's almost perfect homeroom was Leadership/ASB! They also had a perfect homeroom for every student making honor roll. Great job Leadership/ASB!!
We love seeing your child(ren) at school. If they are absent, make sure you are calling the school to excuse them. If they have a doctor's appointment, bring in a doctor's note to excuse. If you are planning a vacation, contact the office to set this up in a timely manner. Mrs. Strom is our attendance person, 360-538-8221 or hms.attendance@hoquiam.net

HMS Rotary Students of the Month
|
Each month 8th grade faculty recommends two students for the Rotary Students of the Month. These students are usually students who show academic skills, good citizenship, involvement both in and out of school in a variety of activities and are leaders. This month, we are proud to point out two students that check all of the boxes!
We are proud to recognize Herandi Cortes-Arzate as our 8th Grade Rotary Boy of the Month. The son of Maria DeLaCruz and Efrain Cortes, and brother to David and Elena, Herandi is a well-rounded student who brings dedication and curiosity to all he does. He especially enjoys Band with Mr. Shipman, along with History and Science, and is actively involved in band, wrestling, track as a manager, and piano lessons. Outside of school, Herandi enjoys spending time with his brother, playing piano, and relaxing with TV. He takes great pride in his accomplishments in learning piano and clarinet, as well as his growth in wrestling. Looking ahead to high school, Herandi is excited to explore photography, astronomy, culinary opportunities, and continue his passion for music through marching band.
We are also happy to recognize Kenzie Stankavich as our 8th Grade Rotary Girl of the Month. The daughter of Doug and Cathy Stankavich, and sister to Piper, Justice, and Cayden, Kenzie is an outstanding leader and highly involved student who makes a positive impact on those around her. She enjoys classes like 6th Grade Science and Sports History and stays active through Leadership, Hope Squad, and a wide range of athletics including soccer, volleyball, basketball, fastpitch, rec soccer, club volleyball, and AAU basketball. Outside of school, Kenzie enjoys baking, spending time with family and friends, and getting some well-earned rest. She is most proud of serving as a team captain and embracing her role as a leader both on and off the field. As she looks ahead to high school, Kenzie is excited for increased independence, extended sports seasons, and new social opportunities.

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.
The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.
If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
