I blinked...and it is March already! Hopefully we have left the cold and snow behind us, and we can look forward to longer, and warmer days ahead. The March calendar has a few changes owing to the bad weather this winter, but is always a busy month for staff and students. The Chronicle will try to guide you through it all as best we can. HMS Athletics: Volleyball and Boy's Soccer Underway! Track Next!
Girls Volleyball and Boy's Soccer have begun competition and are in the heart of their seasons. Our Next Sport season is Boys and Girls Track and Field which begins after Spring Break on April 14. Please make sure your athlete has all forms filled out in Final Forms, and a current physical on file so they don't miss a practice.
For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.

Student Led Conferences March 31-April 3
The week before Spring Break, HMS will be hosting Student Led Conferences. At this conference your child will present their portfolio to you and share educational goals, struggles, and successes. You will hear how your child is progressing academically and behaviorally as well as review their attendance.
Conferences will take place March 31st- April 3. Our evening conference is Monday, March 31, from 5-8 p.m. Our afternoon conferences are Tuesday, April 1, Wednesday April 2, and Thursday April 3.
A letter is coming home with your student for scheduling purposes. Please write/circle your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of times that work for you and your child to conference and then ask your child to return the invitation letter to their Homeroom Teacher before Wednesday, March 12th. The form will be highlighted with your conference time and returned to you by March 18. Your conference will be held in the cafeteria, but you will have an opportunity to meet with any teacher in their classroom after your conference. HMS Boy and Girl of the Month: January & February
Each month, the Hoquiam Rotary honors two 8th grade students who are selected by the 8th grade staff for any of the following attributes: academics, involvement in school, citizenship, and service.
This month we are proud to honor four students who embody these traits.
Our boy of the month for January is Crosby Dick. Crosby was nominated due to his citizenship, and academics. He is the son of Lisa and Josh Dick. His favorite class at HMS is ELA with Ms. Krohn. In school, he is involved with Football, Basketball, the After School Program, and he also plays baseball outside of school. In his spare time, he enjoys playing sports and video games. Crosby is most proud of his good grades. When he transitions to high school next year, he is looking forward to experiencing the campus at HHS, as he thinks its pretty cool! Congratulations Crosby!!!
Our girl of the month for January is Maggi Quigg. Maggi was nominated for her academics, involvement, citizenship, and service. She is the daughter of Abbi and Neil Quigg. Her favorite class is also ELA with Ms. Krohn. She is involved as a member of Volleyball, Track ASB at HMS, while also playing fastpitch outside of school. In her off time outside of school, Maggi enjoys hanging out with her cousin. She is very proud of her athleticism and being involved with a lot of things at school. Maggi is looking forward to high school and to get the chance to show off her brain. Well done, Maggi!!!
Our boy of the month for February is Parker Swantek Parker was nominated due to his citizenship, and academics. He is the son of Kristi and Chris Swantek. His favorite class at HMS is ELA with Ms. Krohn. Parker is an avid golfer and hopes to compete when he gets to high school. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, reading and video games. Parker is most proud of his good grades. Parker has a lot of friends already at the high school, so he is most looking forward to getting reacquainted with them on a daily basis next year! Well Done, Parker!!!
Our girl of the month for February is Ivy Fairbairn. Ivy was nominated for her academics, and citizenship. She is the daughter of Carrie Faribairn and Kyle Ralkey. Her favorite class is also ELA with Ms. Krohn, who ended up with a clean sweep this month. She is involved in her studies, and being a good friend to others. In her spare time outside of school, Ivy enjoys drawing, writing and listening to music. She is very proud of her empathetic nature, and her emotional intelligence. Ivy is looking forward getting to chew gum next year in high school! Congratulations Ivy!!!

I looked up from my pile of papers, and it is already the end of January. Yikes!
This month started two times a month for Counselor Talks in the classroom. I am continuing social emotional lessons with a focus on Hope. We all need hope in our lives. It is what moves us forward. Students were asked what hope means to them and some wrote making my parents proud, going to college, getting better at math, making new friends, etc.
We started the conversation of College and Career lessons. Sixth grade looked at hobbies and how they can become a career. Seventh grade took an interest survey and looked at the different types of careers that came out of the survey. Some students were very surprised about the types of careers and others were disappointed because what they wanted to be didn't come up. Eighth grade took a career survey, again some were surprised by the results and some were disappointed by the results. In each of these, students get to see other kinds of careers that are available.
Hope Squad
The team practiced using QPR in role plays. The final practice was them creating their own role plays. We are getting ready for Hope Week during Feb. 10-14.

For the month of December, Mr. Niemi's homeroom had the most students attending school!!
Reminder!! Parents/guardians have 48 hours to call and excuse your child. Per the state, students should not have excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused. Make sure you are calling your child in for absences! It is important to be in school.

HMS Student Fees
There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.
The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.
If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
