April 2025

April is here, and with it conferences, Spring Break, and a new sports season. Our focus turns to the upcoming state testing in May, and ensuring students are as ready for them as we can make them. While the weather still is winter coat weather, we are seeing leaves on the trees, and flowers poking through after their winter slumber. It is a time where the world is awakening to the promise of longer, warmer days ahead. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns that we need to be aware of. Our office phone number is 360-538-8220.

HMS Athletics: Track begins April 14!!

Our Next Sport season is Boys and Girls Track and Field which begins after Spring Break on April 14. Please make sure your athlete has all forms filled out in Final Forms, and a current physical on file so they don't miss a practice.

For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.

If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/

Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf

You can find updated Fall Sports Schedules here: https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=33572

Please understand that contests can change at any time. We face an age of limited number of bus drivers and referees, so changes are likely. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them.

Parents: Words come out of my student's mouth but I don't know what they mean...

Gen Z teens seem to be flipping the everyday way we communicate on its head. If you have heard your teen talking to other teens, or read some of their texts, it seems to be full of words that make no sense. Here is what you need to know: A lot of these terms they are learning from their video games, memes, and wherever they go online to socialize. They are basically grafting what they see and hear in funny (at least they think so) videos and content into their daily speech. So if your kid turns to you after you ask him/her a well thought out question and responds with "Uhhhh.....6'7"...you have experienced the communication gap that we sometimes see and hear in our classrooms. The link below is a basic guide to some of the words you may see or hear from your teen. There are more exhaustive lists out there, but this one is "school appropriate."

When I come across good resources online, I feel it is important to share them. This article is a good one! https://www.weareteachers.com/teen-slang/

HMS Boy and Girl of the Month: March

Each month, the Hoquiam Rotary honors two 8th grade students who are selected by the 8th grade staff for any of the following attributes: academics, involvement in school, citizenship, and service.

This month we are proud to honor two more students who embody these traits.

Our boy of the month for March is Caleb Bennett. Caleb was nominated due to his citizenship, and academics. He is the son of Harold and Stephanie Bennett. His favorite class at HMS is Math with Mr. Gwin. In school, he is involved with Basketball. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball and video games. Caleb is most proud of his family, and how good they are all doing right now. When he transitions to high school next year, he is looking forward to being able to carry a backpack around, and learning Spanish. Congratulations Caleb!!!

Our girl of the month for March is Kenny Canel. Kenny was nominated for her academics and citizenship. She is the daughter of Josue Canel and Magdalena Huinil. Her favorite class is ELA with Ms. Krohn. She takes her role as a student very seriously and as such is taking Geometry at the high school as an 8th grader. In her off time outside of school, Kenny enjoys hanging out with her friends, and playing video games.. She is very proud of her grades, and her taking high school geometry years early. Kenny is looking forward to high school and to get the chance to go to dances, join sports, and the various activities that await her there.. Well done, Kenny!!!

Counselor's Corner

Counselor's Corner

Where did the year go? April already?!!

This month started two times a month for Counselor Talks in the classroom.  I am continuing social emotional lessons with a focus on Hope.  We all need hope in our lives.  It is what moves us forward.  Students were asked what hope means to them and some wrote making my parents proud, going to college, getting better at math, making new friends, etc.

We started the conversation of College and Career lessons.  Sixth grade looked at hobbies and how they can become a career.  Seventh grade took an interest survey and looked at the different types of careers that came out of the survey.  Some students were very surprised about the types of careers and others were disappointed because what they wanted to be didn't come up.  Eighth grade took a career survey, again some were surprised by the results and some were disappointed by the results.  In each of these, students get to see other kinds of careers that are available.

Hope Squad

The team practiced using QPR in role plays.  The final practice was them creating their own role plays.  We are getting ready for Hope Week during Feb. 10-14.

Attendance

Do your students have routines that help them get ready for school? Check out these ideas

#ShowingUpMatters
#AttendTodayAchieveTomorrow

Starting in February a perfect attendance will also mean being in class on time.

Reminder!!  Parents/guardians have 48 hours to call and excuse your child.  Per the state, students should not have excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused.  Make sure you are calling your child in for absences!  It is important to be in school.

If they have a doctor's appointment, bring in a doctor's note to excuse.  If you are planning a vacation, contact the office to set this up in a timely manner.  Mrs. Glasgow is our attendance person, 360-538-8221 or hms.attendance@hoquiam.net.

HMS Student Fees

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.

The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.

If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
