May 2025

May on the Harbor...one of the best months in the calendar. After a long, dark winter and a gray, wet spring, the sun makes its re-appearance in our lives, and the days begin to warm. In the school calendar, May is a dizzying array of concerts, track meets, progress reports, assemblies, awareness walks...gasp, gasp...and state testing. May is busy. There is no way around it. And we always seem to pack more things in. The end of the year is coming fast, and if you blink in May it'll be here when you open your eyes. So....don't blink. Enjoy May with all of its busy-ness and chaos. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns that we need to be aware of. Our office phone number is 360-538-8220.

Missing Indigenous Women's Walk-Monday, May 5...2:00

As part of a national awareness campaign, students from HMS will have the opportunity to take part in the Missing Indigenous Women's Walk on Monday, May 5. The walk will start at the HS upper parking lot at 2:00 and be in the local area of HHS, HMS and Emerson. THIS IS STRICTLY VOLUNTARY ACTIVITY. If you want your child to participate, we ask that you please call in and excuse them for 6th period. Students must be excused and sign up to particpate. We ask they wear red as part of this worthwhile effort

HMS Athletics: Track season is underway!

Track is underway, having shown well in their first two weeks. Hoquiam will be hosting two home meets in May, on May 8 and May 12. If you can help, there are all kinds of jobs to do to make a track meet run smoothly. Please let Coach Abbi know by calling the HMS office at 360-538-8220. Home meets are a bit different in that home field athletes start at 3:30 to get their throws and jumps in, while the running events start at 4:00. Please come out and support our Cubs!

This is the final sport season of the calendar year, but it is never too soon to book your child's physical for the fall sports season which starts in late August.

For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.

If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/

Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf

You can find updated Fall Sports Schedules here: https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=33572

Please understand that contests can change at any time. We face an age of limited number of bus drivers and referees, so changes are likely. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them.

May is State Testing Month!

May is the month that students in all grades take the Smarter Balanced Assessments in Reading, Writing, and Math. 8th Grade students get a "bonus" assessment in Science as well. Our testing dates will be as follows:

  • 8th Grade Science Assessment (WCAS) will be given in class the week of May 12-16. They will have a normal schedule as the assessment will be given in their regularly scheduled Science class.

  • The Math Smarter Balanced Assessment will be given on May 19 and 20. Students in grades 6-8 will all test. The school will be on a testing schedule with the first two hours of school set aside for testing, and them their class periods to follow.

  • The Reading and Writing Smarter Balanced Assessment will be May 22 and 23. Students in grades 6-8 will all test. The school will be on the same testing schedule as the math testing.

Parents: Time to get those summer reading books scoped out!

We get that getting your child to read during the summer months isn't easy. But you can't beat it for helping them put their active minds to work doing something that can only help them. Whatever grade your student is in, here is a list of recommended new reads for this summer. Check them out, and see if something aligns with what your student is interested in!

May is Concert Season!

Our music Program has two big concerts left on the calendar for this year. Both fall on the same week in May.

On May 19, our Choir kicks off the week with the District All-Choir concert. The HMS and HHS choirs will perform, under the direction of Ms. Anna Messanger, at the 7th Street Theater. Concert begins at 7:00 p.m.

On May 21, the band has its turn with the District All-Band Concert at the HHS Gym. The band, under the direction of Mr. Drew Shipman will begins its concert at 7:00 p.m.

Please observe Concert Etiquette while at your student's performance. They work hard, so give them a listen, and THEN give them a shout when their performance is over!

Rotary Boy and Girl of the Month-April

Each month the Hoquiam Rotary allows us to honor a boy and girl of the month. The 8th grade students are selected for any number of criteria which include academics, citizenship, service to others, and involvement. These students are honored at a Rotary Luncheon.

This month we are proud to honor our two students who were both selected for their academics, citizenship, and involvement.

Grady Abbott, son of Emma and Eli Abbott, is our boy of the month. Grady is appreciated by his teacher for his work ethic and respectful demeanor. His favorite class is ELA with Ms. Krohn, where his love for writing continues to grow. Outside of the classroom, Grady stays active with baseball and wrestling, and enjoys winding down by watching movies. He’s especially proud of how much he has grown in all areas of his life, noting the progress he’s made in both maturity and personal development. As he looks ahead to high school, Grady is most excited about exploring new opportunities and starting to shape what his future might look like beyond graduation. Well Done Grady!

Taylor Graham, daughter of Nic and Cassie Graham is our girl of the month. She is a talented and creative student with a passion for both music and the arts. Her favorite classes are Band and Algebra, and she proudly participates in both Band and Choir at HMS. In her free time, Taylor enjoys knitting, crocheting, painting, and all forms of art. She’s especially proud of being recognized as the best flute player in the middle school. Looking ahead to high school, Taylor is most excited to join the Marching Band and take on the challenge of Geometry.

Counselor's Corner

Counselor's Corner

It has been a whirlwind in the counseling office these past two months.  The later part of March our 5th, 6th, and 7th grades registered for next year.  Lots of excitement from the 5th graders about attending middle school next year.  I would say our 6th and 7th grade students were not as excited about leaving their loving teachers to explore a new world in the next grade.  Our 8th graders are ready for high school.

We are getting ready for state testing this month.  Please make sure your child gets a good sleep and a good breakfast, even from our awesome breakfast program.  Remind your child to just do his/her best, relax, read the material 2-3 times before answering questions, and to take his/her time.  If your child misses a testing day, I will catch them up on another day.  After testing is a downhill slide to June 17!

Attendance

Student success begins at attendance. #ShowingUpMatters #AttendTodayAchieveTomorrow

We have seen an upswing of students with unexcused absences.  Please make sure you are calling your child in-- 360-538-8221 or hms.attendance@hoquiam.net.  You have 48 hours to excuse your child.

Here are our homeroom winners for the most attending students:

February-- Mrs. Folkers, Mr. Pelan, Jr., Ms. Pumphrey, and Mr. Londino

March-- Mrs. Falla and Ms. Pumphrey

HMS Student Fees

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.

The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.

If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
