HMS Athletics:

August is here, and we are days from Fall Sports beginning! Our fall sports lineup is Football for 7th and 8th Graders (Youth Football has the 6th Graders); Cross Country for 6th-8th Graders; and Girls Soccer for 6th-8th Graders. The first day of practice for HMS Football will be Wednesday, August 20. Cross Country and Girls Soccer will begin on August 25. We will have times for practice soon, be watching Final Forms and your email for updated information.

For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.

If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/

Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf

You can find updated Fall Sports Schedules here, when they are created: https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=33572

Please understand that contests can change at any time. We face an age of limited number of bus drivers and referees, so changes are likely. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them.

Parents: School Shopping for this year

Our goal at HMS is to try and minimize the financial cost to your families in terms of school supplies needed for the coming year. Once again, this year we are able to provide a binder, paper, pens, pencils, highlighters to your student. We get a lot of questions about what else do the students need, at this time of year. Here is a list of some suggested items.

  • A backpack for carrying items to and from school. Backpacks are to be kept in lockers during the school day, but they have a definite purpose in getting everything here and back home.

  • Extra pencils and pens, because they will lose them, sometimes very rapidly, during the course of the year.

  • Extra paper-You just can't have enough. Get the loose leaf packets so they can put in their binders as needed.

  • If your child wants colored pens or pencils for their own use or are picky about those things, those will always be a good purchase. Nice, but not required.

Again, we are providing them with the basics they will need in every class. That does not prevent you from getting extra items if you feel it is needed or necessary.

While we are on the topic of school shopping, here are some guidelines to keep your student from having to have a dress code conversation:

  • Shirts must cover the midriff

  • Undergarments must be covered

  • Pants at the waist, minimal rips above mid-thigh

  • No halters, sheer clothing, blankets, capes, or slippers. We make exceptions for some of these for Spirit Weeks (we have roughly 3 of those per year).

  • Shoes required at all times...slippers and steps sometimes don't mix well.

  • Hoods must stay down indoors...we need to be able to see their heads and ears.

  • No inappropriate or gang-related items or logos (inappropriate means clothing that relates to alcohol, tobacco, drugs or paraphernalia, or suggesting or sexual themes)

If you have any questions about items or clothing, please give us a call, or stop by, and I will be glad to explain the why's and what for's.

HMS Student Fees

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.

The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.

If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
