Spotlight on Excellence

Spotlight on Excellence: Tammy Talevich
Emerson Elementary Transition to Kindergarten Paraeducator

What part of your job brings you the most joy or energy each day?

The best part of my job that brings me joy is hearing the laughter, seeing the curiosity and innocence from the kiddos while exploring and growing in their skills.

What motivates you to keep growing and learning in your work?

The endless amount of energy the students bring every single day motivates me to keep growing and learning no two days or students are ever the same.

How do you hope your work positively impacts students, families, or your school community?

I hope that the work I do will better prepare students for the learning challenges that are still ahead of them and impact them and their families in a positive way, I hope they can see their hard work pays off because I can see it every day.

Congratulations, Tammy, and thank you for your outstanding work!

New Staff

We are pleased to welcome our new HSD staff member!

Raeann La Flame, Native Ed Liaison

To help us get to know her better, we asked the following question:

What excites you most about joining the Hoquiam School District in your new role?

"I am excited to be stepping into the Native Ed Liaison role. I hope to be able to foster a collaborative and community focused relationship with the Native youth of HSD. I am most excited to establish a program that is rooted in the Indigenous practice of interconnectedness."

Hoquiam Seismic Safety Projects Update—MAJOR SHIFT IN FOCUS

I would like to provide our community with a very important update regarding the progress of our Seismic Safety Grant projects. These projects represent a once-in-a-generation investment in the safety, stability, and future of Hoquiam schools.

Junior–Senior High School Project (Grades 7–12)

Where we are:

• Early planning, site studies, and feasibility work were completed in 2024.

• Design work has advanced through the Schematic Design phase, meaning we now have a strong initial vision for the future facility.

• Our project team - including district leadership, architects, construction partners, and staff - has been meeting regularly to ensure the design reflects student and staff needs.

What’s next:

• The project will undergo a formal Value Engineering process this spring to ensure cost efficiency and long-term value.

• However, the next phase of design (Phase III) is currently on hold due to state funding timing.

Important legislative update:

• The Washington State Legislature has signaled intent to fund the next phase of this project in the 2027–2029 budget cycle.

• While this is encouraging, it means:

• Design work is paused after the current phase

• Construction is now anticipated to begin around 2029, with completion projected around 2031

What this means:

• The project remains a priority at the state level

• Our team is ready to move forward as soon as funding is released

• In the meantime, efforts are shifting to where funding is currently available

K–6 Elementary School Project (Primary Focus Moving Forward)

This is where momentum is now accelerating.

Where we are:

• Planning and feasibility work were completed in 2024.

• Educational programming (what the building needs to support learning) was completed in 2025.

• Design work is actively progressing and expected to reach a key milestone this summer.

Key legislative win:

• In the recent 2026 Legislative Session, the State approved state budget that includes funding for the next phase of design (Phase III) for the K–6 project.

• This allows the project to continue moving forward without delay.

What’s next:

• A Value Engineering study will take place later this year to refine cost and efficiency.

• Full design work will continue immediately after.

• The project is expected to be ready for bidding in Summer 2027.

• Staff and community will be invited to provide input at key benchmarks during the design process.  Stay tuned.

Projected timeline:

Anticipated Construction start: Summer 2027

Completion: Summer 2029

What This Means for Hoquiam

Due to decisions at the state level, the K–6 project is now the immediate priority.

This shift allows us to:

• Keep momentum moving forward

• Deliver a modern, safe learning environment for our youngest students sooner

• Continue preparing for the Jr–Sr High School project when additional funding is released

• Because the K-6 Elementary Building will be built prior to the Jr-Sr High Building – there will be a full size gym that can be used for athletics during the construction phase.

• Our project team remains fully engaged and aligned, ensuring both projects are positioned for success.

Final Thoughts

While it is disappointing to pause progress on the 7-12 Jr–Sr High School, we are encouraged by the Legislature’s continued commitment and clear intent to fund the next phase.

At the same time, we are in a strong position to advance the K–6 project immediately, which will have a significant and lasting impact on our community.

Attendance Matters

Every Day Counts!

  • When a student walks through the school door each morning, something important happens — they connect with their teachers, their peers, and their future. Regular attendance is one of the most powerful factors in your child’s success, and right now it matters more than ever.

The Stakes Are Real

  • Missing more than 9 days per year can impact student achievement. By 6th grade, chronic absence is a key dropout warning sign. And by 9th grade, attendance predicts graduation more reliably than test scores. Every day in the classroom is an investment in your child’s future!

District Events

  • SBA is starting soon! Be looking for communication from your school with specific dates

HHS Band & Choir: Disneyland 2026

The greatest band in the nation performed in the happiest place on earth! Band students marched down Main Street in a Disneyland parade, had a stage performance at California Adventure, and had a soundstage clinic where they played along with Disney favorites.

The band and choir performed for residents of the West Los Angeles Veterans Home, and visited California State University at Long Beach where they had clinics with music department staff.

Teaching and Learning

Understanding the Smarter Balanced Assessment

Each spring, students in grades 3-9 and 10 participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), Washington's annual measure of student progress in ELA, math and science (WCAS). The assessment isn't about getting a grade, it is a tool that helps districts, schools and families understand how students are growing over time and where additional support may be needed. The results help our district ensure every student is on track for college and career readiness.

How You Can Support Your Child

*Make sure your child is present on testing days

*Encourage a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast on test days

*Remind your child to do their best and that this is just one part of the     picture of their learning

Your support at home makes a real difference! Thank you for          partnering with us to help every Hoquiam student shine!

Summer Programs

Planning for our Summer School programs is currently underway. Students may qualify based on demonstrated need, including proficiency levels, academic growth during the first half of the year, and/or credit deficiencies.

For elementary families, if your child qualifies, you will receive an invitation during Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences. High school students will be notified by their school counselor later this spring.
