As we enter the final month of the school year, I want to take a moment to thank our students, staff, and families for a great year at Hoquiam Middle School. June is always a busy and exciting time filled with celebrations, activities, and opportunities to reflect on the growth our students have made throughout the year.

I want to thank our students, who have shown resilience, and determination both academically and socially. We are proud of the progress they have made and appreciate the support our families provide each day. 

This month includes several important events, including end-of-year activities, award recognitions, and our 8th Grade Moving Up Ceremony on Monday, June 15. We look forward to celebrating our 8th grade students as they transition to high school and recognize all they have accomplished during their middle school years.

As we finish the year, we encourage students to finish strong in terms of behavior, strong attendance, and effort in the classroom. Every day matters, even during the final weeks of school.

Thank you again for your continued support of Hoquiam Middle School. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with your students each day and wish all of our families a safe, restful, and enjoyable summer break.

I have been reminded by my office coordinator to remind parents that if your student is taking a bus home and needs permission to board, THOSE MUST BE DONE BY 2:00.

Turnout for Fall sports will begin in late August. Our first sports season is Football for 7th and 8th graders, Girls Soccer, grades 6-8, and Cross Country, grades 6-8. Its never too soon to schedule a physical if your student needs one for next year, and avoid the rush and crush that happens at doctors offices in August.   All forms must be current in Final Forms for your athlete to be able to practice on day one. 

For newcomers to Hoquiam Middle School, we use Final Forms to house our athletic paperwork, and all forms must be completed and the athlete cleared before the first day of practice for the student to participate.

May always goes by like a flash.  State testing is getting wrapped up with students who were absent or did not finish during the regular testing window.  We are all now on a downhill slide to the end.

Tips for Raising Our Sons and Daughters (Chapter 3:7-8) from Face to Face: Cultivating Kids' Social Lives in Today's Digital World:

Our Sons--

- Encourage boys to express themselves openly and honestly through loving acceptance at every age.

- Respect the cultural pressure to appear strong at all times and make it safe to open up his heart to you.

- Get boys talking by engaging them in "action talk" (shooting hoops, working on hobbies, riding in the car, etc.).

- Plan opportunities for your sons to exercise their empathy muscles through volunteering in the community.

- When a boy is upset, give him space until he's ready to talk.  

- Boys do better talking about important, sensitive topics in one-on-one conversations.

 

Our Daughters-- 

- Empower her to be daring- to embrace physical, mental, and emotional courage.

- Teach her to see beyond the ideals of "perfect" beauty and to celebrate her beautiful self.

- Encourage her to use her body for physical challenges and accomplishments such as sports and connecting with the outdoors rather than as an ornament as promoted by the media.

- Encourage her to revel in her uniqueness and find her own voice.

- Support her to be honest with herself and others, even when it seems risky.

- Find good, solid role models in literature and life for her to emulate.

 

Hope Squad

We have wrapped up our final lesson for the year.  We are focusing on getting all assignments completed before the cut off for teachers.  

This will be the last year for Hope Squad.  I have greatly enjoyed this program and the students that have been in it.  The reason why I am closing this chapter is it is getting harder to find students who want to be part of Hope Squad and follow the guidelines.  

Instead I will be working with students in 7th and 8th grades who need that extra support and cheerleader to get things completed.  This will be a very small homeroom.  Some students have already chosen to be part of it and others may be chosen.  I'm very excited for this next endeavor.

Each month 8th grade faculty recommends two students for the Rotary Students of the Month. These students are usually students who show academic skills, good citizenship, involvement both in and out of school in a variety of activities and are leaders. This month, we are proud to point out two students that check all of the boxes!

Hoquiam Middle School is proud to recognize Natalie Bojorquez as our Rotary Girl of the Month. Natalie is the daughter of Adelin Mora and Javier Bojorquez and has four siblings: Mia, Sofia, Lorenzo, and Josiah. Her favorite class is History with Ms. Folkers, and she enjoys spending time taking walks in nature. Natalie says she is most proud of maintaining strong grades and working hard to keep them up throughout the school year. As she looks ahead to high school, she is excited for the opportunity to take more classes and have increased freedom to make choices. Congratulations, Natalie!

We are also proud to recognize Keegan Rice as a Rotary Boy of the Month. Keegan is the son of Ashley Kennedy and Michael Rice and has one sibling, Hanna. His favorite class is History with Ms. Folkers. Keegan stays active participating in basketball, soccer, and baseball, and also enjoys spending his free time playing basketball and baseball. He is most proud of the improvement he has made in basketball through hard work and dedication. Looking ahead to high school, Keegan is excited for more sports opportunities and the chance to compete in front of larger crowds. Congratulations, Keegan, on this outstanding recognition!

There are basically two fees that students have at HMS. The first is our ASB card, which is $20. This is required if your student is participating in athletics and activities. ASB cards also get students into home high school events, and discounts on away high school events. Generally if your student will be attending these events, the card pays for itself many times over. These can be purchased in the main office at HMS.

The second fee is for the PE uniform. The uniform consists of an orange PE shirt and black shorts. The shirt is required and costs $9. If your student has a pair of black shorts or athletic tights, then they can use those in lieu of the school shorts, which are also $9.

If fees are a financial difficulty for your family, they are not meant to be an obstacle for your child's participation. Please speak to Ms. Glasgow in the HMS office if this is the case.
